So much so that even before arriving in Italy, she wrote to her lady-in-waiting in Paris: “Please let me keep some violets from Parma with written instructions on how to plant them and see them flower: I hope that they will germinate well, as I’m going to become a diligent botanist, and I’ll be content to cultivate this elegant little flower again …”.
