Just moments before the performance begins, the same magic always unfolds in the auditorium of the Teatro Regio in Parma: the audience takes their seats, the lights dim, and the curtain rises.

Those lights, which welcome the audience into the auditorium and signal the start of the performance, are an integral part of the theatre experience.

In 2026, the Teatro Regio in Parma will launch a major project for the future: the replacement of 500 traditional light bulbs in the main auditorium with new, energy-efficient LED bulbs.

 

This project will enable us to:

• reduce annual energy consumption by 80%, from 36,000 kWh to around 4,300 kWh, saving over 31,000 kWh, which is equivalent to:

🏠 the annual electricity consumption of 10 households

📱 2 million smartphone charges

🚗 nearly 200,000 km travelled in an electric car

🧺 31,000 washing machine cycles

 

• reducing CO₂ emissions by 8,776.53 kg (approximately 8.8 tonnes), which is equivalent to:

🚗 82,000 km travelled by car – roughly five complete laps of Italy by car

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 the annual emissions of an average European household

✈️ approximately 35 return flights between Milan and London

🌳 the work of around 400 trees absorbing CO₂ for a year

 

✨ Fundraising 

To carry out this project, the Teatro Regio is launching a fundraising campaign with the aim of raising €100,000, involving local residents, theatregoers, businesses, supporters and all those who believe in the value of culture, to illuminate the theatre in a sustainable way.

The new lighting will, in fact, ensure: greater energy efficiency; a much longer lifespan compared to traditional bulbs; improved visual comfort for the audience; and full respect for the hall’s historic architecture. Contributing means taking part in a project that combines innovation, sustainability and the protection of cultural heritage.

Every donation will help to make the theatre more efficient, welcoming and sustainable for future generations.
