Synopsis
Eteri, tormented by an unhappy life with her stepmother, dreams in the woods of the arrival of a saviour. During a hunting expedition, Prince Abesalom, the king’s heir, arrives; he falls in love with her at first sight and asks for her hand in marriage. However, Murman, Abesalom’s vizier, is also in love with her and, by selling his soul to the devil, obtains in return an enchanted gift to be given to her during the wedding. This is how Eteri falls ill.
The entire court advises Abesalom to send her to the countryside to recover, and it is here that Murman requests that he, in his castle, be the one to look after poor Eteri’s health. Compelled for the sake of his beloved, the king consents and the vizier carries out his plan. With his beloved far away, the prince falls ill with grief and sends Murman, now Eteri’s husband, on a long journey to the Indies to procure holy water for him.
Aware of his terrible deeds, the vizier knows he will never return from this arduous journey and sets off knowing that death awaits him. The queen, believing that the sight of Eteri might heal her son, begs her to go to him. The frail Abesalom, overjoyed to see her again, dies. Eteri, no longer wishing to live without love, takes her own life.
